Longhaired Juvenile with Kauri Twig
Hannah Schickedanz
Human/Nature series: What would it feel like to belong completely to our animal selves? My Human/Nature series explores the uneasy boundary between human and animal - the part of us that is instinctive, physical and deeply connected to the natural world, alongside the culture and expectations that shape how we understand ourselves. The fur-covered figures in these paintings are imagined women who seem entirely at home in their bodies. They are not quite human, not quite animal, but somewhere in between. I’m interested in what happens when we let go of the idea that we are separate from nature, and allow ourselves to remember that we are animals too.
