Oh Mai Mai
Gemma Baldock
Stories of curious characters, and familiar rituals that quietly shape our shared
experience fuel my imagination to create each collage work. I am interested in the
space where humour, nostalgia, and human vulnerability intersect, finding
significance in both the mundane and the extraordinary. The collage process reinforces the idea of bringing multiple personalities
together in situations to create a new narrative. The process is slow and intuitive;
an act of collecting, editing, and reconstructing. At first glance it may appear as a
painted picture, but on closer inspection the work is an orchestration of many
parts, where materiality and detail become integral to the reading of the work.
My imagery is distilled rather than descriptive. Figures and objects emerge from
memory, observation, and imagination, stripped back to their essential forms. Through collage, I seek to transform the familiar into something quietly uncanny,
inviting viewers to linger, and uncover stories that exist somewhere between
memory and invention.
