Anne Baldock
Anne Baldock is a working artist based on the Otago Peninsula in Dunedin, New Zealand. Surrounded by its ever-changing landscape and abundant wildlife, she finds constant inspiration to experiment and create across a range of mediums, including painting and jewellery.
Anne’s painting practice moves between detailed figurative works and impressionistic or stylised landscapes. Working across these different approaches allows ideas to evolve naturally, with each style informing and refreshing the other. Occasionally, the two come together within the same painting.
A significant body of Anne’s work explores imagined interior spaces. Hand-cut, mitred birch plywood walls frame each piece, creating intimate rooms viewed from directly above. The viewer becomes a silent observer, like a fly on the ceiling, witnessing domestic moments, curious encounters and gatherings around the table. At the heart of her practice is a commitment to creating genuinely handcrafted, one-of-a-kind artworks.
Anne regularly exhibits throughout Otago and has participated in art shows across New Zealand. Over the past 25 years she has been a finalist in numerous national art awards. In 2024, she received the Runner-up Award in the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize.
